6 places your personality affects your marketing (+ free personality quiz!) – by Paper + Oats

Your personality spills into everything you do, that’s no secret. From the clothes you wear, to the food you eat, to the people you hang out with, to the places you go. So it must spill into your business, too, right? Have you noticed this with other businesses you follow? Someone with a big personality probably has evidence of this in their vibrant branding, their confident messaging, and even in the ways they choose to promote their products + services. Likewise, someone who is more reserved probably has a softer brand, more neutral messaging, and promotes themselves in more subtle ways. (...slowly raises hand...)

Some may call this introversion and extroversion, but we’ll get to that later… wink wink.

For the last several months I’ve been working on a new project that explores these personalities, and lemme tell ya – it’s been fascinating. I’ve been researching how our specific personality traits tie into how we all run our businesses, particularly how we market ourselves. I’ve also been talking to over 50 fellow online entrepreneurs to see what their personality types are, and some may surprise you! Let’s just say, you don’t need to be a huge personality to be a huge success.

Today, I want to break down six places in our businesses where I’ve noticed our personalities affecting our marketing, and how we can use this information going forward to create meaningful + profitable launches for our latest + greatest ideas.

goals + values

We’re going big picture here, and looking at our values. Our integrity + transparency as we launch our products / services. What is our intent? What is our goal with all this? Not like the “I want to sell 100 of these” goals, but like the “I want to make a difference” goals. The why behind what we do will always come out in our marketing, whether we want it to or not. Our personalities can come out here when we communicate these values + big picture goals with our audience. And setting this precedent will carry itself through the rest of the points in this post, as well as the rest of your entire launch strategy. Start here, folks. What do you really care about?

planning + strategizing

Ok, nitty-gritty. Are you a planner or are you a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants-er? Are you a procrastinator or have you already started your Christmas shopping? Anyone who has run a successful launch campaign knows that so much of it comes down to the initial planning phase, where everything was laid out, coordinated to work together like a well-oiled machine. The oil is the planning, and without it, the machine gets kinda clunky. But maybe that’s your personality? Kinda clunky, and more spontaneous than schedule-happy? That’s okay! But just know, this will come out when it comes time to launch that thing you’re really excited about, and it may hold you back.

messaging + presentation

Messaging is a fancy word for aaaaaall the ways you communicate your brand to your audience. This is how you present yourself and what you have to offer. Your personality might shine through the most right. here. Cause you don’t really know what someone is like until they open their mouth, amiright?! This comes through especially in your writing – blog posts, emails, social posts, team communications, client interactions, sales copy, comments, texts, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Your personality shines through in every inch of your messaging – so, what do you want to say, and how do you want people to remember you?

creation + process

This is where your craft is made. The creation of your Thing and the process you took to get there. Your trials + errors, your ups + downs, your decisions, your problem-solving, your forward motion towards the finish line. Is it steady + calculated? Is it late nights + extra coffee pots? Is it excited + rushed? Does your brain even turn off?! Our personality is woven into the products and services that we craft for our customers, because that’s what we really entered this arena to do. You didn’t come here to write blog posts or to schedule tweets, you came here to do whatever it is you’re an expert at. And as you craft that experience for your customers or clients, infuse it with your personality so they know it is distinctively yours.

promotion + marketing

Of course, right?! The main thing I’m getting at – our personalities come out in how we promote + market our products and services. Do you go all out, or downplay your excitement to not seem too crazy? Do you stay buttoned up with business-as-usual, or do you let your freak flag fly sometimes and let real life seep into what you share? Do you tell stories or do you list bullet points? There isn’t a right or wrong way to promote your business, it all depends on your personality. Ok, I lied, there IS a wrong way – marketing in a way that doesn’t feel authentic to YOU. Don’t stifle your personality just to make your launch look like someone else’s. Maybe it’ll sell a ton, but go back to point numero uno in this post – does that align with your goals + values? I’m gonna guess not. Plan your launch strategy around your personality, and I promise you it’ll be better for everyone involved. (psssst… more on this exact thing very soon!)

confidence + direction

This is how you feel about what you’re offering. And if you’ve kept in alignment with your personality for all the other points leading up to this, most likely your confidence in your offering and the direction you’re steering your ship are probably going to line up with your personality, too. Are you sure of yourself or hesitant to explain? Do you make decisions slow or fast? Are you a stubborn mule, or do you know when to let go of something that’s not working? Do you quit before you begin, or do you follow through till the end? All these subtleties and more can play into how you market your brand and communicate your ideas with your audience.

To wrap all this up, I hope you’re realizing that YOUR personality is one of the things that makes your brand unique. Don’t let someone else’s personality drive the decisions you make for YOUR business, just because you see it working for them. Stay in your lane, stick to your guns, and all the other cliches. You do you, girl. There, I said it.
